Star Wars: Rogue Squadron will not be an adaptation of the video game titles of the same name, director Patty Jenkins has confirmed.

The upcoming movie from the Wonder Woman director may share a name with a series of arcade-style games but in an interview with IGN, Jenkins has confirmed the film will have a completely original story.

“We’re doing something original with great influence from the games and the books,” Jenkins explained when talking about the film. “There’s a lot of things being acknowledged and understood about the greatness of all of those things, but yes, it’s an original story and I’m so psyched to do it.”

It looks like the film isn’t going to be following the exploits of Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles as they raid Galactic Empire outposts, then.

From Jenkins’ comments, it seems like we’ll still be getting a fighter pilot tale, though – we can just expect something different from the dogfights and escort missions we saw back in the games.

The Rogue Squadron film was announced back at Disney’s Investor’s Day earlier in December and is slated for launch Holiday 2023.

If you want more on Star Wars Squadrons (the game this time), EA recently launched a new December update for the space dogfight simulator.

The latest update introduced some new Starfighters and a wealth of bug fixes, too – the New Republic gets the B-wing Starfighter and the Galactic Empire receives the TIE “Defender” multi-role Starfighter.
